Attitudinal Survey – 2007 Native Communities of the Future
This report on the Conversations convened by First Alaskans Institute between June and August of 2007 summarizes the comments of over 150 participants in 16 conversations facilitated by First Alaskans Institute Senior Fellow Byron I. Mallott. Those who participated in the conversations contributed over 300 hours of time to discuss the future of Native communities. The report collects the comments according to recurring themes of the conversations:
Native spirituality, culture, and Native identity
economics, costs of living, “have and have-nots”
emerging leaders and leadership
internal Native politics and Native issues
healthy Native communities
men’s issues
cooperation and working together
out-migration/moving among communities
rural and urban issues
climate change
education.
Participants offered recommendations for the conversations’ next steps to First Alaskans Institute and the Native community, including a desire for further dialogue, turning the conversations’ themes and issues into accountable actions, and convening generational leadership gatherings.
