Social Justice Summit, September 24-25, 2018

Centennial Hall, Juneau, Alaska

First Alaskans Institute would like to invite you to an upcoming Social Justice Summit where we will be bringing together passionate and diverse community members, advocates, influencers, Elders, students and all who strive to make Alaska a more equitable and just place. We welcome all who are committed to this vision, inclusive of our incredible diversity in this state from our indigenous peoples to all the other cultures, identities, genders, abilities, ages, immigration/political asylum status and religions that now call Alaska home to our professions, fields of interest or service sectors, for profit and non-profit status, political affiliations, etc. Now, more than ever, we must come together to create the society we want for our future generations – what role do you play and will you play in making that happen?

We value and understand that as Alaskans, the solutions we implement must be co-created and led here. While outside inspiration helps us strive to do better and strengthen our knowledge, ultimately, it is within the hands of Alaskans to make it happen. Today, it can feel like a hard place to be – unsure of political climate and will, yet still committed to making progress for our state, we are called to do more than just criticize the things that continue to tear away at our humanity, we must build what we want. This summit is designed to create a place where this is our central focus- in a collective space we can all be part of creating and advancing solutions, outlining strategies, identifying actions, and strengthening our relationships through growing statewide networks, alliances, and personal commitments.

The title and theme of our summit, “Social Justice Doers: Partners for the Next 10,000 Years…” speaks to our mutual obligation to engage in this work, and is built upon respect and inclusion. This will be a working summit, so be prepared to be part of making it a great experience! It will be an intergenerational, multi-cultural gathering, and youth under 18 are welcome with a chaperone. Our goal is that we will leave the summit with clear, community-driven solutions and action steps for the days beyond.
